How do you protect your computer from Viruses?

It's interesting for me how do you protect your computer from viruses?

As for me - I use "Microsoft Antispyware", "Norton Antivirus" & "Antivir Personal Edition". Also I sometimes check my system using AdAware and HiJackThis.

Yahook, what is that HiJackThis? is it something useful?

I find it sad that it has come to this, but I use:
* !avast Home (e-mail, instant messengers, browsers)
* Spybot (with TeaTimer)
* Adaware
- Counter Spy (registered version)
* HiJackThis (see below for details)

( * = Free, no registration required)

In addition to the above, I use various online scanners, such as TrendMicro/Antivirus.com.


HiJackThis is a very good tool to have as it protects against browser jackings and etc. Here is one review:
"HiJackThis! from Merijn.org is a general homepage hijackers detector and remover. Initially based on the article Hijacked!, but expanded with almost a dozen other checks against hijacker tricks. It is continually updated to detect and remove new hijacks. It does not target specific programs/URLs, just the methods used by hijackers to force you onto their sites. As a result, false positives are imminent and unless you are sure what you're doing, you should always consult with knowledgeable folks (e.g. the forums) before deleting anything."

HiJackThis is really good. There is also cwsschreder - another good program to remove some types of viruses available on Merijn.org :)

I believe one of the most important items to remember is to always back-up your system! Yah, the back up will most likely be huge and yah, it will take a while, but when you are talking about years and years of archives and work of all sorts, a few hours suddenly means nothing.
