well lets see... is it better to have ur own domain to run a blog or use something like thumbbloger... also with a domain name is it a bad idea to use the word "blog" in the url?

Use your own domain name, also create as many thumblogger as you can because you get backlinks to your blog, and SE robots can craw your site faster
You don't need blog in your domain.
Blog in your domain means nothing and unprofessional.

it's always better to your own domain, then you can make your own backlinks for your domains, backlinks = higher rank/PR/Traffic
