i think backlinking, forum profile and signatures, blog postings are the best and permanent ways to give you traffic. Plus you get higher ranking and PR if you have quality backlinks. Title/Meta tags should be well search through keywords tool to get properly indexed hence more organic traffic. Use google/msn/yahoo webmasters tool for your site to be indexed and submit your sitemap ;)

PPC is one effective way in getting trffic coming from search engines

Google are the dominant force, and they offer ZERO assistance to people paying them for advertising. Their "help" sections are vague, misleading and completely out of date. It's in their interest at the moment not to help their advertisers much either. There's enough driving force out there to get them the customers, and a poorly managed AdWords campaign (which I'll bet 80% of them are) is like handing them money for nothing. I'd be willing to state that they make far more from profit from people wasting their cash by piling it into a hole than they would with completely efficient campaigns.

Bing, on the other hand, are actively helping me with my campaign with them. They recognize (at the moment) that customers going to them are looking for more. They've offered to set up my entire campaign for me to make the most out of it.
They understand that long-term customers are seeking conversions, not just traffic.

So, in my limited experience, if you're going for a PPC method, try Bing instead of AdWords. They're far more helpful, the interface is far easier to understand, and their dedication to new customers is second to none.

You might also want to consider creating a social network focussing on a subject that can be easily linked to your product or service. Market that to your target demographic and over time you have a captive audience.

It does take work to start a social network, but once you have a certain number of members it starts marketing and promoting itself. Then you just need to spend a few hours a week adding promotions and so on for that group.
