Hits/Visits defined?

so whats the difference between hits and visits. Im getting 500-1000 hits per day, but only 20 some odd visiits.

well hits I believe is page hits
not numbers of visitors

if you are getting 500-1000 visitors per day
You are in a good shape

500-1000 page hits isn't that much actually
