Please recommend video codecs/bitrates/resolutions

I will be hosting content in FLV format. What codec, resolution, and bitrates do you recommend?

I will NOT be using Adobe's Media Server. These videos will be played right off the webpage.

Due to the huge volume of content and the very different natures of it, I can't make a test for each clip and decide on a good setting for everything. I was wondering what people are currently using.

Any numbers are greatly appreciated.
