I’ve look at all the sites that come up on the first and second pages in a google and yahoo search for free porn. Some of them only have a pr3 others a 5. When I check their traffic history some of the 3’ have more traffic than the 5’. Is there a simple explanation for this or is it more complex?

I think nowadays the reputation of site is more important then PR, but PR is still one of the main parameters.

PR has little effect on your place in the SERP's nowadays. PR lost it's weight as soon as people figured out how to transfer "PR juice" from site to site and used that knowledge to spam the serps.
So what do you believe is a rough recipe for getting high in the serps with keywords?

incoming links is the biggest factor.
